The shooting of Rep Gabrielle Giffords and the Gun Culture in USA

USA , once again finds itself reeling from an attack which is closely related to the issue of gun culture in America. This issue has long been a bone of contention since the founding fathers promulgated the second ammendments to the constitution. They have up to date been unable to strike the right balance on the ethical consideration of pitching  an individual's rights to own firearms as enshrined in the constitution against the prevention of such violent crimes as witnessed in Arizona when Rep Gabrielle Giffords, a Judge, a nine year old and eight others were shot two days ago.
There is a school of thought that says gun ownership does not kill, people do. However statistics shows that  such crimes are prevalent in America more than anywhere else where gun control is vigorously pursued. Granted that there is a rich historical background to the current impasse, isn't it time for Americans to compare the results of gun control in other modern societies especially in the light of a new world order in which war against terrorism is upon us?
Internationaly, US is in the forefront of the fight against Nuclear proliferation. Is this not a contradiction of the idea that guns dont kill, people do
Clearly the present gun culture in America  is counter productive and until they get the issue right, I fear we will continue to witness such hideous crimes.
